Poem written by Benjamin Wiechel

"Pain and Sorrow"

I see
I feel
I learn
The power of pain and sorrow
The most potent emotions in my life
Sapping my strength
Dimming my intellect
Aging me before my time
I cannot escape them
They are always with me
Their presence far from comforting

I seek
I search
I scrounge
For a temporary escape from
The pestilences which follow me
I try to change my life
My perspective
But it does not help
For they await me around each
Corner and bend
To them I owe
The magnitude of my depression
That which makes me kneel and beg
For an end to all my pain

My poetry is my voice
My way of showing you
That which abounds inside me
Sometimes it is a beacon of hope
More often it is a lamp post of
Despair
Of loss
Of pain
This is my life
My being, my existence
I ask only that
You let it touch your heart
As I may never do so
In any other way

And thus
Do the pain, the sorrow
The depression and loss
Momentarily lessen
Whilst I write this poem
And perhaps someday
I may find myself moving forward
Along the road to
Happiness
