Poem written by Benjamin Wiechel

"Peace"

A moment's peace
A few short seconds of silence
A breath of life
Into this worn, beaten life
A small, violent twitch
The only sign of life left
In this haggard, distraught body

The pressure, the stress
The wearing down
It continues
Day by day
Hour by hour
Minute by minute
Second by second
Wearing down to a small nubbin
It does not end
It does not weaken
It only grows, and grows
Until the strain becomes
Almost too much to hold up

It cries out
It weep
No one hears
No one listens
A silent, shouting voice
In the darkness
The vacuum
The void
A lonely soul
Banished to eternal solitude

A world full of people
Living together
Working together
Sharing lives
Yet each one so isolated
That they cannot hear
The weeping
Of the person standing beside them
They cannot feel
The pain
The sorrow
Within others' hearts
Their only concentration
Themselves
A self-centered society
Run on hatred, loathing
Unhappiness
Loneliness

Open your eyes, your heart
See, feel those around you
Be not afraid to reach out
And share with each other
I too am guilty
A sinner in my own right
I know the pain
The sorrow
The loneliness of the void
And yet, I still
Am open to all
Despite everything
My heart aching
Begging
To heal
