Poem written by Benjamin Wiechel

"Meaning of Life"

A soft tremelo
A tone sounding softly
Across the wind
Slowly the sound of
A clarinet
Sweet and sonorous
A flute now
Clear and smooth
As if the wind
Flowing across a field of wheat
The high, sharp ping
Of a trumpet
The velvet of a French horn
Trombones, tuba
Now a violin, a viola
All joining together
Blending, mixing
A beautiful melody
Harmonious, meant to be

* * *

A soul appears
A silent dance
Drafting, wafting across
The view before me
A second appears
Begins to dance with the first
The twirl, they whirl
Blending, mixing
A beautiful melody
Harmonious, meant to be

The music, the souls
Blending, intermixing
Becoming one, separating
A beautiful picture
All the colors of the rainbow
The work of a master
Yet created by no specific being
A melding of many into one
One, yet many
Intertwined
What we call life
A world of excitement
Of people, of all creatures
A beautiful painting
A musical masterpiece
Listen, watch
Notice the colors of the music
Hear the sounds of the paint

Each of us is important
Each color, each sound
All blend to make the masterpiece
Without one, with a discordant one
The picture changes
Darkening in those places
Minor in key
Those that are bright, cheerful
Near them the picture brightens
Major in key
Feel the power of the art
And understand
That each person
Each creature
Is important
For without each piece
The masterpiece falls apart
It becomes holey
Missing portions of the whole
No longer a masterpiece
Just a broken piece of hope

Don't give up the hope
Don't give up your place
In this masterpiece called life
For you are special
And important
And needed
By every single creature on Earth.
