Poem written by Benjamin Wiechel

"Barrier"

Alone
Surrounded by people
All twined together
Talking
Yet saying nothing
Meaningless communication
Devoid of emotion
Of feeling
Of caring
Of the essentials of life

What have we become
That words have grown
To lack meaning
To lack force
That anger and hatred
Are the only true emotions
That carry through
This world we live in
A barren place

A flower
A small child
Any thing of beauty
Something that should cause joy
Something that should bring a smile
They bring only a quirk
In the mask that you wear
The walls
The barriers
That protect you from pain
They also separate you
From everything that matters
Your mask
So many layers deep
So much a part of you
That you can not
Tell it apart from yourself
You have become the mask
A superficial, unemotional being
The entire world
Its emotions whored out
Until they were buried or destroyed

It is a sad state we live in
That a real connection
Can not be formed
Between two humans
Where love and caring
Have disappeared by the wayside
Where violence, hatred, and anger
Rule the waking world
Beware the future
There is yet time to change
But change now you must
The mask must be broken
Removed, destroyed
Your heart uncovered
Risks taken
Pain will return
But so will the excitement
The love, the joy
The caring
Those things which make life
Worthwhile
