Samsung Moment CL14 Update Observations

by Strycher on Feb.16, 2010, under Android

I finally got the update to CL14 on 25 January, 2010, as noted in my previous post Samsung Moment CL14 Update. At the time, I was unsure whether the update really improved anything or not.  I have been using my Samsung Moment pretty heavily since then, and I have observed a few behaviors after the fact worth noting. I would also note that it is not yet evident whether these are entirely specific to my phone or the update in general.

Items of note are:

  • Battery life is definitely improved, but applications can still drain battery life faster than expected, and battery still drains faster than Blackberry (see Lock 2.0 vs. Lockbot – Android Screen Locks for more information)
  • Device Self Service 1.1 no longer launches (confirmed on two different Samsung Moment devices running CL14)
  • Wireless service can intermittently crash requiring a device restart (seems to be related to a specific application, but have not identified which one)
  • GPS works better and wireless assist is definitely nice
  • NFL widget constantly loses connection and needs to be "tapped"

The biggest challenge with CL14 is what I described in my last post – the process of updating can be painful if you've customized your phone.  I look forward to the Android 2.1 update, but I saw on Twitter today that Sprint is still negotiating with Samsung and HTC over how the update will be provided (OTA, PC-based, or in-store).  Given today's announcement that it is coming in early Q2, if you have not updated to CL14, you may want to wait until 2.1 rolls out.
